90 hp merc tilt trim

i have a 90 hp mercury when you try to trim the motor up or down you can hear the hydralic motor running but nothing happens had to loosen the screw on the side of motor to manually raise motor when i did fluid ran everywhere do you use transmission fluid????? do not know what year the motor is serial# 0G227591

Yes ATF is the standard PTT fluid. Look up the serial number on the maxrules.com website to get the year. Likely mid nineties or so.
A service manual would tell you how to set the manual release.

If your system had fluid and the motor was spinning ... then the only easy answer is that somebody forgot to put in the driveshaft that connects the motor to the hydraulic pumping gears. All other answers for motor spinning on a dead system lead to major rebuild.

The white nylon manual release located underneath the motor and pointing to your right should be seated but not tightened. It works like a hypodermic plunger. Once the tip is in the hole then further tightening only causes damage to your trim system. Before your fill your system again, take it completely out and look at tip. It should have three orings and a perfectly rounded tip. The size of the tip should be slightly larger than a BB. If the tip is broken off then your system should be reomved from boat and completely disassembled. It should not be run again until the tip and all shards have been completely removed from system. If your release is black then the tip is squared but still roughly same size as BB.

finally got a chance to work on boat it was the manual release plug the end was broken off after i dug out the o ring and broke ball end. i found a replacement but it was the black one with square end. mine was the white one with ball end. deciced to try anyway they want $46.00 for new one put it in raised and lowerd and kept adding fluid then it started working.
