Hello! I have an early 2000’s Johnson 90hp. When I was heading back to the launch I was 3/4 throttle and I lost all power but the motor was still running. At first I thought I spun a prop but when I drained the gear oil it was silver and shiny and there was metal all over the magnet. Where do I go from here? Reverse gear spins freely. Forward gear grinds and will spin with some force. Neutral functions properly.

Try to find a good used one. Powerheads blow more than gearcases so if you weedle through the mess you might get lucky.

These gearcases are flimsy / not robust like older ones.----Take it apart.----My wildest guess is that the teeth stripped off the gears.----Your location?

I’m right off of lake st Claire. I was able to get my boat home using the trolling motor luckily I was right in front of the ramp.

Lots of parts in FL. Take your wife on vacation (lower units cheaper here and lots of them ). Now , you surprised her with a vacation so next take her to sea world in Miami( cheaper ) or something ( tell her Disney next time, maybe California ( lots of boats there too). Do it right and your lower unit troubles will be over because you will come home with a different boat.
