Re: 90 hp force wont turn over! help!

update... fixed the starter 4 times before it worked for good, 2 times stuck up, one time stuck down, i think its because the nut is loose im not sure if im supposed to tighten it all the way down and torque it, i have a habit of over tightening things.. when the starter engages, its loosens the nut a bit more every time... should it be tightened all the way down? also, i can get her to fire up every time now! i ran it hard with seafoam in it, smoked out the carbs real good, ran well. when i fire it up now it sometimes dies in neutral, sometimes dies when revving, etc.. i know you are all thinking to test the stator (any step by step on how to do that with my multimeter??), but i am convinced it is my kill switch, which still doesnt function properly, and when i keep the button pressed in with my finger (no lanyard with it, i think its supposed to have one, universal lanyard keys do not work, all 6) i can run it forever in any gear and any rpm.... that leads me to believe that its the switch, like i presumed before, i am ordering a new one because they are like 12 bucks... in the mean time, any info on testing my stator? where is my rectifier? how can i test that? you guys are really halping me out this forum is sweet.

The starter bendix nut should be run all the way down. It should not work loose. It should be a deformed thread nut that self locks. If your nut has three stake marks on three side faces, remove the nut and with a punch give those stake marks a couple of good shots to refresh the deformity of the nut. If it is a nyloc nut, replace it with a new one. If it is neither, then preferentially get a deformed thread one as it locks better than nylock.

If you can not do any of the above use permanent grade threadlocker (locktite) on the nut threads

$12 well spent on the switch. Sounds like it is your problem.

I would not worry about the stator or regulator until you fit the new switch. IF the motor runs better with the switch I would give it a service and tune. It my just need adjusting. Outboards have a habit of stalling at idle if the idle speed is set too low.

There are some very good write ups in the Engine FAQ sections under the ?Repair & Maintenance? heading. (Testing rectifiers .link & sync, Compression testing.) Spend some time looking through this section & it will answer a lot of your questions.

The bolt on top of the starter needs to be tightened and use some thread locker. If the nut loosens it will allow the starter gear to rise too high and bind on the flywheel.

The only other advice I would give is not to get too carried away with pulling things apart as you learn about the motor. Quite often parts are replaced in the process of trouble shooting that were really not part of the problem. Test, adjust and clean before replacing.

Re: 90 hp force wont turn over! help!

i will read FAQ more thoroughly but i couldnt find a clear answer so heres one more mind boggler...

tried starting it by bypassing switch connecting 2 leads direct and nothing happened, wouldnt fire.. so i disconnected both leads completely and took the switch off all together and ir fired up and ran great?!? could it be possible that this wiring actually disengages the switch and breaks continuity when the button is pushed in and not the other way around?? thats the only thing i can think of...
also, what does the lanyard actually choke off when clipped on, as os doesnt actually keep the button pushed in, just clips around it?? please let me know, i would love to get it out there tomorrow but dont want to get stuck because of some stupid kill switch, im gonna bring the switch with me and duct tape it down if i have to but id rather not!

I?m not sure how your kill switch works. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea.

It can only work in one of two ways.

1. It grounds (shorts) the ignitions circuit out so the motor will not run.
Switch needs to be open for the motor to run.

2. I completes the ignition circuit so the motor runs.
Switch needs to be closed for the motor to run.

It sounds like yours is the first option. When the wires to the switch are not connected together the motor runs.

Have you tried testing the switch with the safety lanyard attached to see if the switch is open or closed. You can use the ohms setting on your multi meter to test it. Open will read ?O.L? & closed will read ?000.0?. You could also try a test light with a battery in the circuit to test it as well

You could also try starting the motor with the wires not touching each other and then touch them together. If the motor stops you will know this is how the circuit works. Then you will need to find a safety switch that is open when the lanyard is in.
