What happens if you do pull the shifter pin out of the bottom by mistake? Can it be put back easily by someone with above average mechanical skills?

If you haven't moved the linkage or banged the lower around, you may be able to put it in and get away with it. To check if "you got away with it" , put the shifter in forward and check that the prop is locked, put it in neutral, check that the prop spins both ways, put it in reverse and see if it locks up again.

If everything checks out, you are good to go. However, if you can only get in one gear or none, whoops, you have to disassemble the lower.
