Just got this boat. the first thing i did was to add a tell tale but no water came out. next a new pump, still no water.removed the lower unit and the thermastat cover connected the garden hose to the bottom of the water pipe and turned on the water on. with the motor tilted about half way up, still no water getting to the thermestat housing.i can look up the exhaust port and see the water running back out around the top of the pipe as far up as i can see. could a bad grommet under the powerhead leak this much? does the pipe come out through the bottom or top?
Thanks,Rich

Suspect you have a blockage.

Try forcing the water into the thermostat housing.

If the water pipe is loose, you have to get it installed properly.

I'm pretty sure you have to take the power head off to replace the rubber grommet on the end of the water tube.

I would inspect the water pump impeller to make sure it's intact. Might be a piece of rubber impeller that stuck in the water passage.

Having said that, I would suspect that you have a blockage in the exhaust cover on the port side of the motor. There are some small water passages that go through the exhaust cover that are routed to the block/thermostat. It's not uncommon for small grit, sand and corrosion to plug up those passages. Be careful when removing the bolts on the exhaust cover. They sometimes get corroded and snap off when removing them. I wouldn't worry too much about the rubber grommet at the top of the water tube just yet. Unplugging the blockage may be good enough to reduce the water pressure so that it no longer leaks.

Depending on what you find in the exhaust cover water passages, you also might want to consider taking the head off and inspecting the water jacket around the cylinders for crud too.

Here is a diagram of the water flow. Disregard the water pressure relief valve. You don't have one. This diagram is for an older 4 cylinder motor, but the water flow is exactly the same as your motor.

Salt water? Fresh Water? Fill out the profile/location?
Salt water corrosion will block the exhaust passages and make it tough.
If you can see water leaking at the gromet under the head???
Then you have problems, removing the head problems.
What condition was the old impeller? One piece or pieces??
