90 Force Issues

Ok so I just got a great deal on a boat that apparently needed a new thrust bearing changed in the lower unit as well as a new spanner nut and a linkage adjustment. The guy said just take the lower unit apart and clean the threads in the housing. So I was like sounds like I should get it checked out from someone just to be sure. So i take it in to a small engine mechanic and he says I need a new seal kit $80.78, Spool Assy $187, Body water pump $45, Imp $33, and about $400 in labor. The mechanic said the lower unit froze bla bla bla... I was like dang $800 bucks wow! So I left and called back the guy who sold me the boat and he said it never froze and swears by it. So What I am wondering is if this sounds like a legit estimate or am I getting fleased by the mechanic or is the seller of the boat lying? All the small engine mechanic did was look inside the lower unit.

You need to educate yourself, know what you are looking at!! and then tear the lower unit down. as far as the seals go, If it comes apart it gets a new seal!! jmo if you need some advise and have a good camera maybe i can help ya get started.. BUT you would have to be responsable for reassembly..

Yeah, its my first boat so Im just getting into it. All I know is these things can be spendy if you have someone else do it.

A good friend gave me his boat (original owner) I have never touched a 2 stroke or even a boat before but i wouldnt pay anyone to do it either (except the tune) just assembled my first powerhead!! Goes in the boat this weekend, Just need to figure out where a few things go??

I have my lower unit tore down, Seems to be really straight foward..

Nice work man! Looks good, I will be getting into it tomorrow. I just dont have that much time because Im a full time student.
