90 evinrude wont idle or rev in water but it didn't on muffs

Hi guys I looking at a 90 evinrude for a guy I know I had it running in the garden on muff he put it in the water it wouldn't stay idle it wouldn't rev, I checked compression 125 on 3 cylinders 1 had 90 I replaced the head gasket before he put it in the water I noticed water on plug but I can't seem it seem what trouble is please help

What Is the model # or is it a crossflow or 60 degree looper ?

Well ---I know it is a V-4.----But from 1995 to 1998 there were 2 totally different V-4 mofels !

What was your compression numbers after you replaced the head gasket?

I still only got 95 on 1 other 3 got 120-125

Motor likely suffered from a broken piston ring.----From where I sit I would say rebuild time with 4 new O/S pistons.------A very common failure I think.

I didn't see any marks on the cylinder wall, I'm thinking broken ring or stook ring, do u think it would cause this, my buddy said he had it running and give it throttle and it torn the wood off the wharf now no powers at all

I will check the compression on it again, the guy said it had power before he drop it off to me but I'm only taking his word

was the motor running before? if it was sitting a while, that ring could just be stuck and might free up with some Seafoam or MMO left in the cylinder a while, like a long while, a few days or more.
