9.9 lower unit compatibility

Just got a lower unit for my 9.9, problem is there are no exhaust holes under the top fin. is there going to be an issue, can i just drill some holes?? lu.jpg this is what the old one looks like, on the one i just got off ebay there is two blocks that are screwed thru,
just found out its off a 93 9.9, will it still work? any help would be great
