hi,
1989 johnson 9.9 I just had to change the waterpump... wasn't peeing ...it had been in the shop all winter being serviced... 1st time out for the season and I had problems... steam/smoke from under the power head and out the exhaust port... kind of whispy smoke/ steam.

after replacing the pump I ran it in the barrel and all appeared ok.. out in the water while idling along, smoke /steam started. Doesn't seem to effect the performance though... maybe a bit slower at high speed.
anyway, I then replaced the head gasket , thinking that maybe as it overheated when waterpump went maybe that was the problem... in the barrel all was well and out in the water, again smoke/steam . What next? it is peeing like crazy and seems to run ok but I'm uneasy to take the kids out on the water !

there is a water cover (I believe) on the cylinder head.Beneath it is a thermostat that needs to be replaced before you can further diagnos the problem. There is a water tube grommet under the powerhead that can do this, but you would not have a telltale.
DHP

Steam is a no-no. Go get some temperature sticks from your dealer. You need to confirm that the water pump is working properly. Start it and warm it up with the cover off. Let us know what you find.

Peeing is a good sign but that does not necessarily mean that you have coolong water circulating through the block. You may also have an obstruction in a coolong passage - easy to check by removing the head and looking. Another possibility is a blown head gasket - pull the plugs - they should look pretty much the same.

I think on those motors there's a grommet/coupler at the base of the motor for the water inlet than can melt if the motor is over heated. So maybe there is a restriction of the water into the motor.

check out this link, lots of good info about your motor
9.9/15 maintenance article

good luck.

Brent

Hi
I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, an expert, but thanks to this site, I've made a hobby out of fixing up old non running outboards. I've done about 20 so far.

Most of the ones I've done have been abandoned due to overheating problems, mostly caused by blocked water passages. It's either salt water corrosion, sand and silt or remains of old impellers.

If your water pump and thermostat check out O.K, I'd bet it was a restriction in the water passages.

Good luck
Steve

BF,I wholly agree about the water inlet grommet, but in this case I think the grommet is OK since the tell tale works.Think so?
DHP

I was thinkin' maybe enough water was getting through to provide some leak out the tell-tale, but not enough to provide adequate cooling. (?) Or maybe when the impeller went the first time, a vane broke off and got caught up somewhere up there in the cooling passages/head.

Maybe flushing from the thermostat down might help figure out if there's a restriction somewhere.

just my $.02

Brent

It seems like something is clogged in your cooling system. I ran "Salt Away" through my motor and it un clogged something. My motor was steaming also.
