9.9 johnson hit stump, only idle speed

I have a '89 Johnson 9.9. I hit a stump or floating log with it wide open. The motor died, when restarted it will only idle. If I start to open the throttle it just dies.<br /><br />It will push the boat in gear at an idle.<br />Is there a key or shear pin that may have it out of time? If there is how do I locate it.<br /><br />Thanks for any help

Does the engine rev wide open in gear?<br />At minimum, check the lower unit lube before taking it out again. But the engine runs ok???

12 footer,<br />The engine will not rev in nuetral or in gear.<br />It will die if the throttle is open past idle<br />I limped back to the dock at near idle. When I gave it more gas it would just die.<br />I hope this is enough info for you.<br /><br />Thanks

Depends on how hard you hit. You may have sheared the flywheel key thus throwing the ignition timing out. Adrian

OOO yea! Adrian Bick has your answer,me thinks....Forgot about the flywheel key!<br />I hope it has not twisted the crank,and the key did it's job and sheared.<br />This is what I love about this site. I didn't even think of that, but thank the Lord, somebody did.
