I have researched my motor.

Its a Evinrude 9.9 E10RCNS

I have only been able to track down a E10RCN
that shows as a 1982 motor. Just rebult water pump
and Fuel pump. Motor runs as good as when my father and his brother bought it.

Question:
Can I get a bit more out of the motor by replacing the carb with a 15 HP carb of same year. My buddy seemed to think Carb is the only differnce on the 2 engines. And the 15 HP carb has larger bore......All else seemed the same on the engines.

Thanks in advance guys...
Keith......

From what I've heard-no. Ports, reed valve assemblies are different. Does the larger bore carb match up with the intake of your 10 hp. Maybe with some machining you could do it.
Someone w/ actual experience may want to chime in.

As the owner of a '90 9.9, I'm very interested in what you find here.

I too have heard the only real difference was the carb, and later, the 15s had a bigger exhaust tube. My Factory shop manual has nearly identical procedures for the 9.9 & 15.

However, I've also heard that the carb swab doesn't always deliver better performance. Hope somebody here has had success...

I have a factory shop manual & see no differences other than the carb.

What needs to be done is sit down with the 9.9/15 HP parts catolog for your motor.Examine which parts are different.Carb parts don't count if you're
swapping to a 15 carb.Intake parts and exhaust do.And in the manual, pay attention to the parts that are 'nearly identical'.
I've never tried what you guys are trying, but know first hand why you can't make a 115 hp a 135 hp.
DHP
DHP

I stand corrected. I guess the problem is finding a 15 hp carb.

Re: 9.9 Evinrude / Carb upgrade

from the site:When the 9.9hp and 15hp came into being in 1974 and up thru 1980, the only difference between the two was the carburetor. In 1981 there was a change made in the inner exhaust housing for the 15 hp OMCs,. This was a sort of tuned exhaust, allowing the engine to breathe better, helping to up the RPM, which upped the HP, in addition to the different carburetor. The 9.9 inner exhaust housing stayed the same as it was.

The carburetor is different in that the inside diameter of the throat is larger on the 15 hp. This larger throat allows more air to enter the engine. The main jet is also larger allowing more fuel to be sucked in. The combination of these 2 factors allow the motor to gain up to another 1000 RPM, increasing the horse power. Do not think that you can up the horsepower by simply modifying a 9.9 carburetor by replacing the main jet with a 15hp main jet. All you accomplish is that the engine is being fed to much fuel & not enough air to properly mix with it & the engine will then blubber (floods out) at the top end. It can run OK on the lower end & idle OK, but it will have less top end power than with the original 9.9 main-jet. Believe me, as I have been there/done that. Matter of fact that is what got me into writing this article, as I could not readily find any information on the subject.

Factory specification rating for RPM of the 9.9hp is at 5000 & the 15hp at 5500. With operating range for the 9.9hp at 4500 to 5500 RPM, & the 15hp at 5500 to 6500 RPM

The outside visual dimensions of both carburetors appear the same, unless you look inside the throat. The 9.9hp carburetor’s internal throat is .625 dia., 15hp internal throat is .875 dia. The idle jet venturi system is also slightly different between the two. The part number for the 9.9 hp Carburetor Assembly is #388936, while the 15 hp Carburetor Assembly is #338273 up to 1987.

Re: 9.9 Evinrude / Carb upgrade

Thanks knobby for refering on to the web article that I wrote as webmaster on the PSA website. As a matter of fact I keep adding more little tid-bits all the time. Currently I own 4 of these jewels ranging from 1974 to 1992.

I have made this conversion on more than one motors.

Most of the so called experts on this motor are going from hearsay, much borderline guessing.

The carb you want is the one with a potmetal top. The later (about 1986 or so) was totally different & had a plastic top. The later one MAY fit & function, & it looks like it may, but I have not actually tried one yet.

No than you machinist for that excellent article. I think the admins should add a link for it to this site that would head off a lot of questions that pop up. I've used it from day one and continue to point others to it. Thanks for allowing us to reference it. Wadda ya think admins?
