I have a Johnson 9.9 with electric start.
upon hooking a battery and pushing newly replaced start button the motor turns over a couple times then quits. after that no response of the starter.
I pulled the starter and hook it up to 12 v and it spins up.

I worked with the start button which is under the tiller handle and moved shifter back and forth, no response!

is there and inline fuse somewhere.

recently no response of the starter at all

That should have a starter solenoid somewhere on the motor. Start button goes to the solenoid and then to the starter. Follow the starter wires to it. You can manually jump the solenoid to see if that is the problem. If so replace it.

I was thinking the same thing. Everything is so compact and hard to get to.
I'll try to dig deeper. if you have any other ideas please let me know. thanks

Here is a breakdown of a 1996. Not sure it's your model but this is what it should have. Part number 2. The main hot (red) wire from the starter should go to it.

yes, I can see it down in there!
I can't get to it to jump it. I'll see if it can be removed from where it is installed.

Thanks!

I sold the motor before having to solve the issue. My apologies to the group for not being able to post a solution to the problem.
