9.8 merc knock

I have a 9.8 Merc that my mechanic says has a knock that would
take quite a bit to repair. I'm a little handy, but is this something that
could be a get out of dodge deal? Sits on a decent 1972 Alumacraft
Would like to use it as a duck/fishing boat.
