Model 9222M. Cannot get to start position on tiller handle unless I put in forward gear? Motor manual says to advance speed control and the motor will sart but must be in gear to make this advance. Can you not start this motor unless in gear? Also have small coil spring behind in this area that is not connected to anything. What is this to be conntected to? When I try to advance speed control, the rod hits bolt protuding from shift mechanism unles you place in forward gear. --Thanks Gregg IMG_0016.JPG IMG_0016.JPG IMG_0015.JPG

The spring is to hold down low speed mixture cable.----The interlock for shift appears to be doing its job.-----The start marking on the throttle handle is likely out of position / adjustment.----Have you checked for spark as it must jump 1/4" or more.

Thanks Racerone-- How do you adjust the start position on the tiller handle? Also are you saying that there isn't enough spark to start in the start position? The engine will strat & run but only when the throttle is opened and that requires the motor to be in forward gear. Thanks for the spring information on the use for this spring---Thanks---Gregg---

Your best bet is to answer questions.-----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more on both leads ???-----Note ,--- I have worked on these motors since about 1968.------Rebuilt more than 1 of these 9.5 models.---Currently own about 10 of them.
