9.5 evinrude overheating

Hello to all. I need help for a 1973 Evinrude 9.5 I bought used.

The motor was doing ok until I decided to go faster and the handle gave out, as the gears were stripped. I repaired that. Then I tried, foolishly to run the motor out of the water in my garage for a few seconds to ensure the new gears worked well.
I changed the water pump and took out the motor for a drive. The water coming out of the rear hole is very hot and water was leaking out of the top of the head. It was the pull chord, which was not tight. I bought new gaskets and changed all three gaskets on the motor.

I then took off the foot and ran a hose up on the copper tube water intake from the water pump. I expected water to come out of the top hole at the back of the motor. Some water comes out, but most of it goes down the bottom part of the motor, to exhaust through the foot.

My question is that normal? I am thinking either the block is cracked or the thermostat is stuck.

Thanks for the help.

I am new at this mechanical servicing and look for guidance.

Best regards,

If it is the exhaust relief holes that you are referring to, then that situation is normal. Water will exit there once the t stats open. Usually as a mist of sorts. Most of your spent cooling water will exit via the 'foot'. That is unless you have a tell tale retrofitted? Do you?

Other than that, is all well? Is it no longer overheating?

thats normal.

Easy enough to check the thermostat though while you are working on it.

The mist comes out of the rear hole and is quite hot. I can put my hand in the stream and feel it is around 140-160. Once in a while I hear a click and the water comes out cooler, then another click and it gets hotter.

I guess this is normal. I always thought water would be coming out cold, like my 1949 1 .5 Evinrude Alto outboard. The water never gets hot. I assumed this would be the norm for all motors.

I also have a Mercury Thunderbolt 110, and the water is barely warm, not hot like the Evinrude. So much to learn!!!!!

Thanks for your help.

The thermostat seems to be kicking in. I just found the water too hot for my taste. But what do I know, I'm a novice at this.

Thanks for the help,
