898 idle/timing questions?

I just put a new HEI distributor in my boat yesterday bc it had a weird high rpm surge. I changed all plugs and wires. Now the boat runs great at high rpms. But has developed new issues: 1. It will not idle right after I back off the throttle it just does but has no trouble starting back up. Any ideas 2. It overheated yesterday while running 4200 rpms. Any ideas? 3. I set my distributor to 8btdc is that correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

What kind of HEI distributor did you install?

A small cap external coil, with a mechanical advance and optional advance. The boat idled fine before the new distributor which is why I'm not really thinking it's the carb but more timing I set My timing at idle in neutral and not at operating temp I just checked it and it's around 9-1/2 btdc is this the problem?
