898 cuts out and does not want to accelerate

i just bought a 77' searay with a 898 i/o. the boat idles and revs up great in neutral. but when i put it in gear and go to take off it sputters and hesitates to accelerate. it will eventually start to gain rpms but never much over 3700 rpms. does anyone have any clue whats going on? i was thinking timing but im not sure where to start.

the boat will act like it wants to take off for a few seconds but will go right back to its weird miss it has. what steps would this rule out??

Ayuh,... Sounds like a Fuel Delivery issue...

Probably the carb...

Turned out to be the points were loose. I adjusted them on the water. Boat ran alot better after that. I'm thinking about switching to an HEI distributer can I pull the old one out without having to pull the motor?

Ayuh,... It's gotta be Marine Rated,...

Easy swap in the boat, if there ain't Boat in the way....
