89 Yamaha not going into reverse

My 1989 Yamaha 90 2 stroke will not go into reverse for some reason, I even took the shifting cable off and tried to shift it in by hand and it still wouldn't go. Does anybody have any ideas of what it could be? Thanks

Does it go into and out of forward and neutral OK, but just not reverse?
If so then it is more than likely a problem in lower unit.
If it has problems in all shifting then look at the linkage going down to lower unit.
Some of the older twist to shift linkages had rusting problems

Yeah it goes into neutral and forward fine. What can it be in the lower unit?

not sure , depends on how it reacts. Is it grinding when trying to reverse?
Are you shifting while motor is running or at least tried turning prop while motor is off.
Have you drained lower unit and looked at lube to see if metal or water was in the stuff you drained

Yeah it grinds when I try to put it in to reverse, and I drained the oil and put fresh in and there was a few metal shavings on the drain plug.
