Every time I want to start my engine through out the day and its Flounder season here so its about an hour or so each time I start it I have to raise the warm up lever fully and turn it over and it starts right up no problems. With out raising the lever it does not want to start. Normal? Or is something out of adjustment with the carbs? I always thought you used the warm up lever first thing just to do that warm up the engine. I dont need to choke it after the initial start up of the day just have to raise that lever every time. One its running I can set the lever right back down and it idles great so need to slowly back it off to keep it running. Normal?

If you prime the fuel hose just before starting, will it start without the warmup lever? That engine should have quickstart, which will help starting by advancing the ignition timing slightly each time the engine is started.

Ive tried this but no it does not matter. The ball stays firm all day has great prime. Perhaps the quick start is not working? Can that be tested in any way?

Re: 89 Johnson 150 Starter Warm Up Lever Question

When you stop the engine each time, do you tilt the engine up, or does it stay in it's normal vertical position? The quick start feature will add about 200 rpm to the idle when the engine is cold. Once the engine warms to 92 degrees, the extra timing is cancelled. You can see that in the tach on the boat. Every time you start the engine when warmed up, you will get quickstart for 5 seconds. If you run the engine over 1100 rpm, quickstart's timing advance is cancelled.
