I have bee working on my boat for moths. have done many repairs and i finally turn it on and now it wont turn off.

When i finally turned it on, i did try turning it off with the kill switch and by turning the key off. A few minutes later i noticed i could not. the only way I it turn off was by pushing on the ignition packs, so i thought maybe some wires were touching. 2 wires coming from the stator were rubbing on the fly wheel and were peeled off a bit and exposed, the black with yellow wire or the kill switch wire broke off the block's panel but i fixed and re attached it.

I protected all the wires from touching and still wont turn off. I tested the kill switch and it was fine. The only way i turn it off from the helm is by pushing on the switch to activate the choke and it dies. Could it be the switch? everything seems to work on it though. Please help as this is the only thing holding me back from putting it in the water now.

I am in Ontario Southern California my force 50 HP is an 89 on a Bayliner Capri 1500 its a 509X9B

In order to stop the motor, the ignition signal is "grounded" when you turn the key to the Off position. Pushing the key to engaged the choke simply floods the motor. Not the best way to stop your motor. Looking at the third picture, it appears that there is a wire missing from the ground connection on the terminal block. See red circle.

If you notice, that terminal position and the one above it are connected with a jumper strap. Everything connect to the bottom two terminals is supposed to be connected to "Ground". Wires that are connected to that terminal should be as follows:

1. Black wire that goes to the Over-Heat buzzer.
2. Black wire that goes to a small terminal on the starter relay. This terminal on the relay should have another black wire that goes directly to ground.
3. Blue wire that goes to one of the terminals labeled "M" on the ignition switch. The other "M" terminal on the ignition switch should have a white wire that eventually goes to the CD module.

I would suspect that you have a problem with the wire that goes from the "M" terminal on the ignition switch to the terminal strip pictured above. It's either not connected, or broken and not making contact.

Hello and thank you. The red mark your talking about with a missing wire - well there was never anything there when I got it. And it did turn off before.

The ignition key switch is not marked with any letters either. When i replaced the stator, I put everything back the way it was except for one thing. I failed to document where the ground cable for Ignition coil #1 / #2 and the ignition module, got grounded from. So what I did was on the bottom bolt from coil #2 which is longer than the others - I brought the ground wire to it and in the same bolt I hooked both coils as the Igniyion module.

As I said - it was working fine an turning off fine. All I did to turn it off was push the plate where the Ignition coils are and it turned off.

My plan is to turn the motor on. Unplug the kill switch wire and then ground it and it should turn off. If it doesn't I need to test the wire in the harness and the ignition key switch.

Can anyone tell me how both the coils are grounded and where? And te ignition module also. Please!

If you look closely at the coils, there is a black ground wire on both of them. The black wire is usually attached to one of the coil mounting bolts and should be making contact with the mounting plate. It's usually on the back side of the coil mounting plate so you can't see them. They are probably connected properly because you have spark. There is no ground wire on the ignition module. The ignition kill wire is the white wire that comes from the Blue CD ignition module. Sometimes the wire is Black/Yellow. Regardless, if you touch that wire to ground, it will kill the ignition signal. Make sure that there is a ground wire that goes from the coil mounting plate to the engine block. The fact that when you push on the coil mounting plate tells me that you have a loose ground connection.

Re: 89 Force 50 HP will not turn off with switch nor kill switch

I currently have the black wire from each coil and the ignition module connected to a ground in back of the number 2 holding bolt in back. If you are saying that the ignition module should not have a ground wire - then my question is - where or to what do I connect the black wire from the ignition module? I see the kill wire being black and yellow. I have a feeling something with ground is not properly connected. I will do some tests tomorrow. Thank please advise if you find something else I should try. Thanks

I'll have to double check the Black wire from the ignition module and let you know later this morning.

Have you checked to make sure that the coil mounting plate is grounded to the engine block? Either through a mounting bolt or a black jumper wire between the two?

I was wrong in my statement about there not being a Black wire from the CD module. My apologies. There is a Black wire on the CD module that should be connected to ground. Most likely bolted to the coil mounting plate or the engine block itself.

Ok guys it was a broken ground wire coming from the block to the packs plate. The plate was not grounded so neither were were the coils nor the ignition modules at first it was but finally broke off and i made the mistake of putting all 4 wires in one bolt instead of on the hloding bolt and grounding the plate. Thank you guys.

Hi folks! I got the same motor with the same issue- when you say ground wire from engine to the packs, what are the packs? Did he mean Coil packs?

There is a black ground wire that goes from the engine block to the plate that the coils and CD module are mounted on. It was broken.
