Hey guys, the weather is getting better and I am going to try and replace some parts of my floor.

I was thinking of cutting out the bad sections and then with 3/4 ply lay right over top of everything.

Do you think this would just add unwanted weight? or is there a better way that is easy for the 1st timer to do.

My main concern is the 2 consoles before the bow and the seats in the bow. I'm worried if I cut too close to them that they would lose support then I'll be in a mess.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Arnaldo,

There's an old saying... do it right the first time or do it again. Sorry to be a downer but based on my experience with my '84 Capri, if part of the floor is gone, once you take it apart you'll find more wrong.

I'm a first timer too and if you look at my share a project site you can see some pictures. As I started to remove floor, I found stringers that were bad. With the exception of the Transom, I don't think any of the original wood will be left in the boat when I'm done.

The work isn't hard, but it is messy and time consuming. There are lots of great folks on this site to encourage you and answer questions.

I encourage you not to shortcut it for you and your familys' safety.

Jeff

My boat had been "repaired" juat as you describe when I got it. If you click my link you can see the horrors. I ended up releiving myself of somewhere around 300-ish pounds of saturated foam and wood.

You are much better off just tearing everything down and starting from scratch. It is a bit of work, but you end up with a strong, safe boat. You can lay some ply if you want, and it will work, but you will always wonder about the mess that is underneath that ply. Good luck...

as a stop gap measure (temporary), you can cut out the floor, to inspect. you may find you are already waterlogged. if foam is wet remove it. you can put 1/2" ply over, seal it. it may last 2-3 seasons. but eventually, you will have to fix it correctly, or send it to the dump. don't wait till it get dangerous and unsafe. by the way i hate carpet in a boat.

JasonJ,

I wish you lived in my area of Ontario :)

Your projects are amazing. I talked to mad dad and he said that he would give me a hand if I needed to do more than just the floor. He has built his own boat before and he's a Master Carpenter by trade from the old country, so I have no worries except i wish I would have tackled this during the winter.

Glad to hear Arnaldo, you'll be much better off in the long run doing it correctly. The patch job you were contemplating would have created more long-term problems than it would have solved. Jason- I have an idea! This winter you can come down here, move into the room above my garage (600 sq ft w/ full bath & kitchen), and help me restore a couple of boats. It never freezes here, and most days are 65-75, so test runs are not out of the question!!!

If it were me, I would lay some wood temporarily and use it through the season, then tackle it in the fall. Or you could tackle it while the weather is nice, take a year off of boating, and start next season with a tight boat.

Thats tempting Studly, but I think the boss would take issue. The wife wouldn't mind, Florida would be nice. I havn't been there in over ten years. Plus, all the killer Ebay deals are Florida boats...

Its not that hard look at my project for the 17 foot version of your boat. If I were a real carpenter it would have gone much better.

V
V
V
V
Click on the link below.
