Tach don't work. Replaced rectifier. Read alot of serches. Next step is stator.
Disconnect yellow wires and should be 20 plus AC volts?
Motor runs well and is charging.
Boat is 250 miles away from here. Trying to go prepaired.
Any suggestions? Tom

You may have a bad tach. Are you getting 12VDC to it from the ignition switch? Most tachs will sit at about 1000 RPM with the key off and then go to 0 when you turn the key on.

get a DVA adapter, then download and print out the free trouble shooting guide, both have links in my sig below. that way you can know if your stator, power pack, rectifier, coils are good or not..stop the guessing. but the tach issue may just be a bad tach or wiring to tach.

Hello SparkieBoat,
Have ordered DVA adapter.
Have not found definitive way to check stator, other then disconnect both yellow wires and should read 20 plus AC volts.
Am I on the right track.

down load the free troubleshooting guide in my sig below. instructions for your motor are on page 54-56. also you can look up your part number on the CDI electronics site, and download the install guide which has specialized troubleshooting procedure for each part.

Yes, the AC voltage should be 20+ idling, meter connected to the disconnected stator yellow wires.
As you increase engine RPM, the voltage should rise. I cannot give specs as they do not exist.
But the voltage rises on mine to around 35vac.

You do not need the DVA for this test. Regular AC volts on a DVM will do.

Just on an aside, I have attached a regular trouble light (120v standard light bulb for home use) to the yellows. At idle, the bulb is dim, and as you increase speed, the bulb brightens. You can "load" the stator this way, if you want to try that. For a more meaningful test, keep the meter on it as you do this loaded test. Should not see any appreciable change in the loaded voltage from the unloaded voltage.
This is NOT a really good loaded test, by the way. The light bulb doesn't draw much current at all.....

You will rarely, if ever, need to do the above testing, but it is fun to play with them.....

DVA test

stator

brown to brown/yellow = 150v - 400v connected or disconnected.
orange to orange/black = 11-22v connected and 45-120v disconnected.

there are other test for timer base and power pack, but your problem is almost sure stator, DVA test will tell the truth.

here is a link to CDI test for your regulator

here is the one for your stator

But remember that the brown pairs and the orange pairs do not provide the tach signal. That comes from the yellows.

I finally checked the stator. Yellow wires disconnected, one volt only. will order stator tonight.

What I don't understand, motor runs great. 14 volts at the battery. Just curious how the stator works. How can the charging circuit be good, yet no voltage out of stator.

Thanks again, Tom

did you follow the testing procedures I linked above? I am unsure what test you performed or what the results were. you would have to list each test. for instance
yellow wire #1 to ground = ?? DVA volts
yellow wire #2 to ground = ?? DVA volts

ect.

Disconnected both yellow wires from the stator Connected A/C volt meter to the yellow wires from stator. Started motor. Meter said one volt.

I still do not understand what you did...you have to be specific. did you do yellow wire to ground or yellow wire to yellow wire??? did you use a DVA adapter or meter????. if you did not use a DVA meter then you are just wasting your time. the very specific instructions are in the links I took the time to provide you with. follow the instructions or I just cannot help you at all. but I have been trying very hard..

Disconnect the 2 yellow wires. check for short to ground, one yellow at the time. One meter lead to yellow wire, one meter lead to ground. Meter set on low ohms, reading should be 0. Check both yellows, any reading above 0 indicates a shorted stator.

Next, Check the ohms between the 2 yellows, 1 meter lead on 1 yellow wire, 1 meter lead on the other yellow, reading should be within specs from orignal oem service manual.

AC voltage check, meter lead on 1 yellow wire, 1 meter lead on the other yellow. 18-20 volts at idle.

Check magnets in flywheel, one may be broke. If one of the magnets is runed tach does not get the correct pulse.
