I Have 1989 evinrude 150. Seems after riding about 5 minutes or so, turn engine off and fish for a bit (10-15 minutes). engine will not plane out after restarting and rpms will not go over approx 3800, normally will plane out quickly and rpms approx 5000-5200. If engine put in neutral and revved, normal. Was considering taking to mechanic but would like to fix myself if possible. Any help appreciated.

My guess is you're loosing a cylinder, Fish Hawk. What I'd do is limp back to the ramp and pull the plugs. One should be different, probably wetter, then the rest. That's tha one not workin'. If you're gonna try and fix it yourself, get yourself a manual.

Which Grapevine?

c/6
Hooty

Could also be some crud in one or more of the carbs. Check for one plug not firing first as Hooty has indicated. Also suggest that you get the OMC Shop & Parts manual specific for your motor

Thanks Hooty & SoLittle. Took plug socket last weekend and pulled plugs when started acting up, all plugs looked same. Replaced anyway, no difference. I thought about carbs but very odd that it seems to only happen after engine already warmed up. seems to run great every time right when get to lake??? Have a manual but its a little harder to ck some of the things being intermittent.

Ok Ok, Hooty you were right. Took spark tester to lake to test while acting up. lower cylinder on port side not firing. swapped coils, next trip out ran fine at first, then as normal started acting up. checked spark, still not firing on lower cylinder on port side. i would assume i can eleminate coil as problem??

Be sure about that power pack. These are expensive parts to replace ONLY thinking they're bad. Someone please correct me, but I thought a bad power pack would kill an entire bank at once. The timer base going bad can kill individual cylinders. $30 for a factory manual would be a good investment at this point.

Good luck,
Duck L.

I immediately thought power pack because I experienced that w my boat. At first it would not fire right till at about 1000 rpm then like a switch turned on. Later developed such that the boat performance slowly degraded to where I couldn't get on plane...then I knew I had a problem. Of course could be something like a ground out, intermittent short, bad wire. Also might check into what might kill a powerpack in case the pwrpack is a symptom and not root cause. My failed pwrpack was a new offbrand. Bought new OMC and no problems since some 3 years I guess

Probably $250.00-$300.00 from dealer. They have OEM packs at the link below:

www.maxrules.com

Another good site for a pack. 2 year Warranty, too. Have heard very good things about parts from this site. About $150.00

seilermarine.com

Hooty,
Thanks for info on oem manual, much better and more detailed than the clymer. In ordering I have been informed this is a 1991. If you have any ??'s in future on this year and model give me a call (817) 999-9946. Will post what problem was when finished for all.

Is this a 1991 60 degree looper or a 1991 crossflow 150?

OK. That sheds a completely different light on the subject. See how important the model number is?

Are you sure its not 2800 instaed of 3800?
