I've smoked two batteries in the last week. Cranks fine on a fresh charge then becomes weak after a dozens starts. Not getting a lot of cranking power and smoke comes from the positive connection causing it to melt the terminal. Not sure if its a short or and issue with the starter.

Did you take to cables off and clean them good? Also look for signs of corrosion at the base of the lug. They can corrode inside where you can't see it. A voltage drop test would confirm this if that is the problem.

Starter went today. Would a bad starter make the batteries smoke or is there a problem that killed the starter and my batteries?

Some of the 150XP engines came with the huge 35 amp alternator. Your year 150XP engine does not have that large alternator, just the standard 10 amp type. Loose battery cable connections can cause problems. An odd coincidence that the starter just went. Would be interesting to see what was going on inside that old starter. Were the brushes shorting out, etc. Let us know how it runs with the new starter.
