I have a 88' model 120hp Evinrude which I'm having trouble with stalling. It runs really well when under way but sometimes( Only sometimes) when I stop travelling and let engine idle it will give a cough(as I call it) then stop straight away. You can restart engine and it fires straight away.It always starts well after it stalls and the problem is NOT consistent. On one outing it did NOT stall once, but the next outing it gave me trouble.I have installed a new Racor fuel filter which has not helped.
Anyone with Ideas???

what are your idle rpms. cough indicates its running rich, sneeze lean. it runs well at high speeds, so the filter is not causing any problem.

Yeah thanks for the help, I guess it maybe more of sneeze than a cough now that you have mentioned it.
Idle speed is 800rpm.There doesn't seem to be any mixture screws on carbies, are they set? This motor was also a VRO set up but it has been disconnected before I purchased it.

i have an '88 88spl which is the 90hp without VRO, i think the jets are fixed. give her a good decarb, and run seafoam in your fuel mix. here's a link, rather than buying seafoam 'deep creep', you can use a spray bottle to spray into the carbs until it almost stalls. it the same stuff just not areosol. it's like an enema for you engine, gets the crap out, and makes things run smooth. also been known to free up stuck rings, and increase compression and performance. the engine will smoke like a forrest fire, but thats the crud coming out.
