88 searay seville 100 hp outboard mercury

I have a 88 searay seville with a 100 hp mercury outboard. I recently replaced the impeller onandhad a friend who has done it before help me. He forgot to put it in forward gear before we removed the lower unit. When we reinstalled the lower unit it was stuck in forward gear we put the lower unit back on and now it is stuck in forward gear. Any suggestions?

Sure, take the gearcase off. Set the gearcase to neutral, by turning the shift shaft CCW until it clicks into neutral. Now set the throttle to neutral and reinstall the gearcase.
