can someone pls confirm for me which cylinder is no1, just to ease my suspicions about the timing on this beast of mine.

The top cylinder is number one. Cylinders are numbered in the order that the pistons attach to the crankshaft, from the top down. Firing order is the same as the cylinder numbers.

its v4, port or starboard.

Stand at the rear of the engine and look at the spark plugs, the one that is the highest is #1 cylinder.
