Salt water for 4 years with no annods, no bottom paint, water in the bilge, owner gave up and let her sit after she would not start? You can bet that nothing has been done to this boat for the past 4 years. As for both engines giving out at the same time I would be thinking bad ground or something like that. I would offer him $1,000 knowing that I may end up having to dispose of it. I bet he is sick of paying slip fees and running out there to meet people.

this.

Smoke you may be on to something. Shore power was connected and breakers on (ac and fridge were running). Will this disable the 12 volt starting system?

ALL being ok, you will have to spend good money on it being hauled, scrapped and painted. Also fuel is going to get very expensive which is probably why is sat in the slip.

cheap boat though...maybe too cheap,

IF you have to replace both motors it will cost more than you think, l bought a cheap 30 ft flybridge cruiser late last year and decided to replace the ageing V8's with new ones, they ended up costing more than double the cost of the boat...and took nine weeks to fit...needed new engine beds, extra time on the hardstand,

does the boat only have the one steering helm, the one on the flybridge?

Honestly if you can't determine it's rot free (my guess is there's rotted wood somewhere) I'd run. A 27'er with stringer or transom rot is a big undertaking.

On a semi related question...is that the "right" boat for that area?

I'm contemplating a move to SC (from the Pacific Northwest) and keep hearing that my 24 foot pocket cruiser is the "wrong" boat for Carolina. All my buddies there have center consoles and smaller runabouts.

Following the mindset that the best two days are the day you buy and the day you sell, even if you have the perfect boat, if nobody wants it...

I am at the NC coast all the time with my skiff, camping/fishing. Pocket Cruisers are VERY common. The carver he is interested in would suite well for the NC coast. Won't get you back in the skinny water looking for flounder or reds, but to cruise the intercoastal, rivers and sounds running from town to town. Would work very well.
