87 XR2 150 Tilt problem

I took my boat out today and had a good day fishing. When I got back to the launch I loaded the boat on the trailer and started to raise the motor and after it hit the end of trim it started making a high pitch squeal noise. Raised the motor with the manual release and checked fluid is was full but I added some trans fluid just for good measure after lowering it back down it went up and down three times like it was working fine then the forth time It stopped again. I was told to drain it and refill that it may have some trash in it that's plugging something so I am going to try that. Any Idea's? I just find it strange that the trim works fine but as soon as the tilt goes to lift the motor it starts to whine a
little and wont go anymore. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like air in the system.keep adding fluid at full up position after 3 or 4 up/down tilts,then repeat.You have done it once,just keep filling till it takes no more.Its self bleeding.Then check for any leaks,especially at top of main ram.

Thanks aussieflash I will give that a try. I looked for leaks and didn't see anything. This motor has very low hours so its super clean and it shows no sign of leaks any where.

After you tilt her up, let her set for a few minutes to allow the air to bubble out of the PTT fluid. Now refill and cycle up and down. Repeat.

Thanks Chris1956 I have it sitting with the fill screw out right now we will see how that works out.

Ok I am throwing in the towel. I think its time for a professional to have a go at it because I am getting no where. Thanks for the help and I will hopefully come back with an explanation for the problem I am having.
