Today I ran into some debris and thought nothing of it. Quickly checked the prop and all seemed ok. I headed down river a couple miles and decided to take another look. So I trimmed up the stern drive and when i restarted the engine I heard a knocking sound coming from the drive. I was able to trim the drive back down and could no longer hear the knock. The boat was able to make it back to the dock about a five hundred yards away with what seems to be no ill effect. After I moored the boat I trimmed up the drive again and restarted the boat the knock came back. Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be? Should I chance enjoying the end of Labor Day weekend or just call it a season and try to mitigate any damage that may have occurred.

Re: 87 Thundercraft

sounds like it may be a ujoint. not something you want to come apart under power... worst case can sink the boat, best paddle home and hope it didn't tear up the yokes and drive shaft.

Obviously not the only thing it could but something very common that would change with trimming...

no matter what it is, i would have a look and narrow it down. Almost always better (safer and cheaper) to catch things before they fly apart... imho

You NEVER want to start the engine with the drive all the way up. The ujoints can hit the transom shield and really tear things up. I have seen it happen on both Mercruiser and Volvo.

Have no clue what you have.
