I just bought a 1986 Ranger 390V with an 87 Suzuki DT 175. I had a hard time starting it. I finally got it fired up, I went to take off and the engine would not turn any faster than 2000 RPM. so I had my friend stand on the bow. and the boat finally got on plane. After that the engine tached out at 6200. the boat will only run up to 30 MPH. i think this boat should run at least 50.

I just had the carbs rebuilt, flushed out the fuel tank(s) and lines, new primer bulb, and new filters. this is my first boat. please point me in the right direction.

THANKS

Re: 87 suzuki dt175

It will idle faster out of the water because there is no back pressure on the exhaust. 6200 rpms is fine if not maybe just a little high. More prop pitch will lower rpms but lose hole shot and less pitch will usually raise rpms but lose speed. If you have to have someone stand in the front to get it to plane that sounds like you need less pitch. Good Luck.
