This motor is on a pontoon boat that was restored. The "old" control box was put back on the console. Console was made from scratch. I bought the boat after it was restored.

The boat seemed to run great but was hard to start. I took it out several times with no problems other than starting it. Someone showed me how to put it in high idle. They put the control in neutral, then pulled it out at the base about an inch. While it was pulled out, they pulled it all the way back (like putting it in reverse). This seemed to work great. Or so I thought.

The next time I put the boat in, I tried the high idle. Worked like a champ. Went on our way. When we were ready to head back to the boat ramp, I did the high idle thing, started right up. Half way back we just slowed to a crawl. Ended up having to be pulled in.

Got a couple of problems fixed; fouled plug and carb bowl leaking. Runs great now at idle and speeds up some in forward and reverse but not like it should.

I think this is related to the high idle trick that was shown to me. Now, when I try to put it in high idle, I cannot pull the control bar out at all. And when I put it in forward or reverse while looking up under the console, the entire unit moves some. I'm not sure if it was not mounted properly to begin with. Cables are tight.

My question is (finally): Does the slowing to a crawl sound like it is somthing to do with the control box and cables? Can they be adjusted?

Thanks in advance. And sorry it took me so long to get to the point.
