87 Mercruiser 3.0

iv got a 87 Mercruiser 3.0 I'm trying to find out what out drive is on it, It says nothing on it other than Mercruiser. Anyways it wont go it to forward or reverse i took the cap off the top of the out drive today and the 2 gears in there a striped to hell and back and there are metal shards in my gear oil so I'm guessing this is why it wont shift could that be why or is there still a chance that its my coupling?

If the gears in the upper are striped it will go into gear you just wont be able to tell. Prop will not be tied to eng.

With the eng off put it in gear with the cap off of drive spin the prop and watch the vertical shaft it should spin.

A the very least you should pull the lower unit apart and check for damage.

You have or should have a 1.98,1 gears in your upper. The good news it is probably the most common merc out there.

It's an Alpha 1, 'n you need a New 1....

I suggest an SEI from right here at iboats megamall....
You'll need the 1.98:1 ratio...

FYI if the top gears are stripped I think that the lower will also have metal flakes in it. For the best results get a hole new upper and lower plus align the motor and enjoy.
