Hey folks, this is my first time posting so I appreciate everyones help, advice, and moral support! I have an 87 Mercury Classic 50 (45 hp). I apologize but I do not have the serial number on me at this time. It was running fine one day and then about two days later I can't get the thing to fire. I'm getting spark at the plugs and everything seems to be normal otherwise. Long story short the possible diagnoses is the fuel pump has gone bad. I've got myself the appropriate Quicksilver fuel pump rebuild kit and ready to get going on it but I was hoping to hear any tips, advice, this works and this don't works. Please keep the horror stories to a minimum!!!

Thanks again,

Jason

Re: 87 Merc Fuel Pump

Your fuel pump shouldn't make it not start. The squeezie pushes fuel to the carb, the pump keeps it full after you start.Drop the float bowl check for gunk and stuff clogging the low speed jet.
Check the timing, make sure it's right.Check the flywheel key.You do a compression test?
And I really had a great story about rebuilding a F/P for exactly that motor but won't go into detail about the check valves and how easy they are to bend and how it stopped my friends motor from running right. But no stories. :)
