Does anyone know where i can buy a blank dash for the drivers side 1987 baliner capri? Ive checked ebay and a few google results but cannot find one thats blank plastic...all the ones that ive found are precut for the original gigantic square gauges, not the new smaller circle gauges. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

you could always cut pieces to fit in the holes made of ply then glass over them, fair and paint...more work but it works. I will be doing this with mine as the gauge(plural) is in a retarded place and would not look right with the full compliment of gauges I plan to install.

Another way is to get a piece of plastic to cover the whole dash and mount the gauges to the plastic then screw the plastic to the dash. This will allow easy access to the back of the gauges if you need to work on them.

you could get a sheet of Lexan from your local DIY and create your own dash panel, thats what I plan on doing.

Lexan is like a plexiglass? right? how would i make that into a gauge pannel? the gauge pannel has curves and whatnot its not just a flat peice of plastic....Ive heard of people taking their gauge pannel, glassing a mold arround it,removing the original dash from the mold and pouring new plastic or glass into the mold top make a new gauge panel..and that just sounds like WAY too much work....I can find dash blanks for every other kind of boat...EXCEPT for a bayliner capri!

Lexan is a polycarbonate (plastic), depending on how curved your panel is you could easily roll edges and do soft bends with a little bit of heat, Ive done it a couple times just practicing with my Turbo Torch and a large tip. Just trying to help.

ok.....so im confused my friend....

you want a blank for an 87........they had the gigantic squair gauges....

thats how they come.......

so if i understand you correct.....you bought new gauges for the b liner because yours were toast.....now u want to mount new 2 inch gauges in a 87 dash???.....if this is correct....

you will have to make plexi squairs the size of your current cut outs....then mount the new circular ones in the plexi......its not that tough and will look ok.....but the way to make it look great is to cut out the existing squairs....or mount a whole new plexi over them as suggested.

btw....i have a 90 capri bilgeliner and i just got thru fixing all my gauges....so im really framilliar with the design of the dash and whats all involved in doing what i think you want....its not too hard.

cheers

Unless you have a oddball dash the methods listed will all work. If you post pics we can all see what you are looking at.

The 90 has the large square gauges in it and a flat dash.

Re: 87 bayliner capri dash??

Actually, im not sure if the gauges work or not, i just picked the boat up for a rebuild project, the current (original) gauges look fine, lenses arent cracked and plastic isnt hazy or anything, i just dont like the looks of them, and the dash itself is perfectly fine, no cracks or anything.... BUT ive seen, for other boats, where companys make a blank dash.....where theyve already taken an old dash, made a mold, and did the whole new fiberglassing thing to make a new dash pannel.... and this new pannel does not have any holes in it, so you can cut your own holes for the size, style, and placement of the gauges you wish to put in there, i was just wondering if anyone knew of any retailer that made this kinda stuff for my particular boat......if not what i will probably do is take the dash off, make a mold of it and fiberglass a new dash out of the mold..its not really that hard at all....but would definately save time on my end (maybe not save any money but definately time) to just buy a new blank dash...but thank you for all the feedback.............this is the kind of blank dash that im referring to......and i know, it says UNIVERSAL....but aparently a 1987 bayliner capri was not manufactured in their universe....http://www.greatlakesskipper.com/productdetail.cfm?CatID=SS677&ProductID=1856

Re: 87 bayliner capri dash??

My thoughts for a new dash pannel on a curved dash:

- sheet aluminum can easily be bent to conform to the curve of the dash. Look for some aluminum about as thick as a road sign. Don't forget to paint or cover with contact vinyl to prevent corrosion or dulling.

- Polycarbonate (lexan) in 1/8" is more than strong enough to support gauges and will cold bend to the shape needed with no problem. After fitting the pannel and screwing in place, heat with a heat gun to "relax" the plastic and it will hold the shape when removed. Then cut the holes for the gauges. If clear poly was used, paint the back side with a spray can. Black, white, silver and gold spray paints look great on the back side of plastic and have a deep clear coat look. 1/8" polycarbonate is easy to cut with a sabre saw or even easier with a large tin snips (the sizzor style).

Another cheater thing you can do with a new panel is put a sticky facing on it. I saw one with a carbon fiber pattern that looked great in a very nice boat.

I am also looking for a new dash for my 87 Bayliner Capri Cabin cuddy. Did you ever find a blank one. If you couldn't I would suffice for the original style that is new. My current dash is cracked and need a new one. Please let me know where you found the precut ones. thanks
