Hello,
Been researching for days and this by far seems to be the most helpful and informative forum with a huge membership and tons of information.
So here goes!
Boat started leaking at the transom. After inspection noticed a separation of the transom to stringer brace from the transom and a odd looking aluminum plate with sealant possibly the motor mount bolt plate. Stood on the lower unit and not much flex in the transom but I think I now know why the aluminum plate was added to the outside of the transom. Looking to make a partial restoration will know more once the cap is removed. I have a engine stand lined up and will start with removing engine first. Any thoughts on a safe easier fix (assuming there will be no better ways

1st ? - should I remove the control linkage at the motor or pull the full length cables with the motor?

Remote is attached to the cap, leave the cables connected at the remote control, and they'll go w/ the cap & remote while the boat is disassembled. You'd have to split the control to get them out. Much easier to pull the cable end at the OB.

Tagging along- sorry to see you also have the "aluminum plate of death" on yours- hopefully you will not get the same 'suprise' I did-

am pretty sure this aluminum plate is hiding exactly what we all expect...probably will turn out to be a full transom and stringer/deck restore....planning to post the whole project for helpful input and information available for others yet to travel the same path

Thanks Bob, Cro, JB
Ok so with the help of my nephew Young Jedi (he's along for the duration of the project** took the controls loose at the engine as suggested, overall the engine removal went smooth as it already had a lift loop bolted to the aft of the engine top end, took the aluminum patch plate off the transom, and yep it was a bandaid of the obvious, even had a curvature of where the 150 horses had press fitted against the rotting transom, next post is removal of the rub rail and loosening the top cap which should reveal the obvious project ahead. Time to roll up the sleeves me thinks! Thanks to everyone on the forum for the encouragement and input
trying to post progress pics using the new upgrade will figure it out soon

at the present planning on using the following combination of products which include pour in place hybrid marine repair compounds, non wood marine panels, and bi-axle/woven/mat/resin fiberglass elements
the pourable compounds bond directly to new or cleaned fiberglass and can take fasteners like screws or also be drilled and tapped
note: only use polyester or vinylester resins in contact with the pourable compounds
seacast
arjay 6011
nida-core panels

suggestions/comments welcomed
