Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

no it won't stay running pumping prime bulb... checked gasket on filter looks good, did stator test, coil test, switch box test, rectifier test, all readings were good except on the rectifier. going to replace tomarrow if I can get one, and hope that will help, If not guess the carbs will be comming off... Is this possible for the rectifier to be giving me this type of problem??? Never did carbs before is it possible for me to do or should I take them someway and have done???

Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

My '43 Ford (jeep) wouldn't start, I went thru everything, convinced it was fuel (I always am) finaly I took off this strange rectangular object. It is ceramic and had a copper wire wrapped around a piece of cord. I asumed it was an old school fuse and by- passed it with an in line fuse (nothing fancy). It's running fine and has been for months. Someone told me it is a rectifier. I believe they are designed to dampen (reduce) voltage.
Whats it doing? Voltage in, voltage out? Or is there even continuity?
Does it go from the rectifier to the coil?
If anyone wants to set me straight, I would love to learn more on this topic.
Rock-, I admire your persistance.
I would have to agree with hondon, if you have a visual on live fuel out of the carbs, your getting to much, float bowl maybe hung up.
I would only rebuild the carbs myself if I could get the exact rebuild kit w/gaskets for your motor, great experience my friend.
Aloha
ps I've changed out my share of RACORS.

One more stupid thing I've done myself. Sometimes, there is an additional hot wire that goes on your battery with your hot leed. Messed me up for hours. That was on a motor cycle, and I wasn't that familure with the systems, oops.

I'm sure glad that you found the problem. I had the same thing happen once. You have a great motor there. I have never been stranded (So far). Call it dumb luck, but anything that has ever gone wrong with either of the Mercs that I have had has happened at the dock at the end of the day. :)

Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

well toke boat to shop to have carbs done and dude tells me my stator is on the blink... goes on and off... at times it is working and others it's not... Is this possible??? Well told him to order part, must replace... can't have it on the blink in the water. I guess this would explain the firing up and shuting down thing, but had her running today for 1/2 hr. ran great... spark tested fine and later this afternoon spark was on the blink!!! wouldn't run longer then 5sec. Well if anyone could back this up PLEASE POST!!!

Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

Hey Rock Man ... I had a fuel problem with my carbs and was able to rebuild them myself. Bought the engine manual at Taylor Marine in lower Delaware. Bought the carb kit from my localdealer here in Tempe (Tempe Marine). With some encouragement frombthe chat board here, rebuit the carbs myself. It was steady work, but not rocket science. It took three hours. Not only did it beat an $85/hr. bill from the shop but the whole experince left me pretty cranked up about the boat thing. To topit off, some of the folks posting here seem to actually knowwhat the heck is going on!

Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

well, your story sounds very familiar to me, identical to a fellow I know who is having the same problem with a 95 Johnson 150. First his mech told him it was the power pack $200 later it wasnt. So I tried to help him. I put my DVA on it and everything checked out OK at cranking speed, but motor would fire off strong then die. Occasionally it would run for extended periods then the problem would come back. I watched the DVA on 1 coil input while cranking, got good voltage, motor fired off, then died. voltage dropped as motor speed dropped, so really couldnt tell anything. But since his powerpack was new hes getting new Stator ($500). Icoulnt test his trigger because its a fancy optical unit. Also his timing automatically advanced 5degree for cranking to help it start real strong.

Ive got a '80 90 hp inline 6. Great motor to work on. Simple. My compression is 145-150.Its not fuelrelate, it would idle for several min just on whats in carbs. It could be powerpack, but I dont know. Usually on these , if 3 cyls are misfiring its stator, all indicates powerpack, 2 indicates trigger. I think you can buy a stator for about $120 mailorder. If you have a 3 piece flywheel installation is easy, you dont need to pull flywheel, jus unbolt the outer section from the hub. GOOD LUCK.

Here's a long shot. When you ran that motor after changing the rectifier ,was the motor cover on or off?

Re: 86 Mercury Starts but won't run, HELP ME!!!

MBB,

Yea that's exactly me!!! Drove me nuts because when I tested the stator it always test with in readings, but flux-u-ated at different times tested.

HONDON,

glad to hear from ya!!! Ya I had cover off at times when ran, and I also had it running with cover on for periods of time, but now, man, my spark is WACKY! at times I have and others I have spoty... Like it would fire 1,3,5 and others 2,4,6. Then on all... coils tested fine. Well should have stator on monday and that will answer that question. I am going out of town for a couple of days so I won't be back on boat until at least Wednesday... Sucks because I wanted her done before I left to take with me... Going to S.C. was hoping to do some fishing but now it looks like R&R time with the WIFE. OH! NO!
