86 Mariner 150 bogs down when accelerating

My 86 Mariner 150 runs fine most of the time. But about 10% of the time when I try to come out of the hole, it seems to run at slow speed and wont come out of the hole. Even though throttle is wide open it runs slow and occasionally surges like it is trying to catch. Then eventually it will "catch" and accelerate fine with no problems. The repair people say all test seems to show it running fine. Any suggestions?

My '95 60 HP Mariner does the same thing.
Had carbs done w/rebuild kit and no better.
Try adding some Sea-Foam to gas. That's what
most guys here will tell you. Supposed to run
better with each tank of gas. I'm gonna try that first!!Make sure you've got good plugs too. They
seem to make mine run better. Oh yeah, one more
thing, the motor's got to be tested under load,
or all tests will seem to show running fine.

Re: 86 Mariner 150 bogs down when accelerating

It always easiest for us to diganose if we get some simple numbers first, aka compression numbers. Then test for spark on all cylinders. And test for spark when the problem occurs.

IF you have spark and compression then it is definitely fuel related.

Have someone pump the primer bulb while trying to get on plane and this helps it take off then your fuel pump is ailing and needs to be rebuilt. If not then its time for a carb cleaning.

However since this seems to happen on occassion rather than on a consistent basis I bet you are loosing spark to some cylinder(s). If the fuel pump diaphragm was gonzo or the carbs were dirty it would do this all the time. But check it out anyhows.

Those symptoms are indicative of a fuel pump malfunction.

Had a similar problem with my 84 150 blackmax. Did the sea foam and new plug wires. That did the trick. The only way I found out the plug wires were bad was to run the motor on the muffs at night. Then I could see the spark jumping to the block. Hope this helps. Joe

It sounds like a "possible" fuel related issue. But you need to check spark first then compression. That is the easiest....to start with...
