I had the boat out last weekend and after a few hours I was running about 3/4 throttle when I noticed a noise that sounded like a valve tap then it quickly got louder and stopped the motor so I got towed in. At the marina I pulled the head and the cylinders appeared to be ok as far down as I could see. When I rotate the flywheel i seem to hit a spot that I cant get past. I am assuming it is a rod bearing. Any one have any thoughts?

Thanks

Drop the lower unit and see if it still won't turn.
Check the intake side for cracks in the housing. Then if won't turn the next step is to remove the intake side down to the reed assy.Look past there and see.Jerry

Re: 86 force 125 grinding noise engine stopped

I pulled the lower unit and it is definately the problem. The flywheel spins freely.I can spin the prop when in neutral but can barely spin the driveshaft.Does this mean its a driveshaft bearing or is there somthing else it could be?The upper bearing on the driveshaft(below the waterpump) appears to be o.k. Does the prop shaft have to be removed to remove the driveshaft from the lower unit. The book says it does but it is explaining a full lower unit overhaul.
