Re: 86 bayliner capri

"They all read 125PSI" says it all. Welcome to the best boating forum on the web,bar none.
Do a search "Bayliner". Then do another search "force".
There are many opinions, many praises and put-downs.. I'll give you mine.
I own a Bayliner Capri. The construction is sub-par. It is a pretty boat,a 1989, that STILL gets "Nice boat" compliments at the ramp.
I love the lines, the ride, and the towabilty of this boat.
Problems I've had;
Engine (50HP Force)...Overheating. Turned-out to be a wasp nest in the intake.

Lower unit driveshaft seal.

Hub prone to spin-out. This hasn't happened to ME yet, but was the main problem with the engine before i bought it.

fuel pump diaphram and carb kit. This was due to the boat sitting 3years. This fact probably had much to do with L/U seal too.
But mainly, the rubber parts turned into tar paper. Alcohol enhanced fuel was used before I bought the boat, allmost exclusively. This is death to rubber.

Otherwise, flawless 12year old engine.
NOW, the bayliner. Lots of decking had to be replaced. Original fiberglass does not fully encapsulate the stringers or bulkheads.
Very poor layup, with foberglass "fur" everwhere below the decking. It took 30buks worth of resin to finish what Bliner started.

Saying all that, I wouldn't trade her in for anything less the a Boston Whaler Outrage, because I just plain like the boat.
Again, welcome to the site. Nice to make new buds.

Re: 86 bayliner capri

The book calls for 145-160PSI compression. But the fact that the readings were equal is an indication the engine is fine. One reason is,compression gauges can lie, giving only relative readings. The other reason is, if you had a problem, one cylinder would more than likely be lower than the others.

Sure, the wasp nest (actually a mud dawber) is funny now...But at the time, it drove me LOCO..Even more loco than normal. I tore the lower unit off, replaced the impeller, and still no water thru the unit. I tore into that thing 3 times, had the heads off, exaust port plate, you name it.
Nowadays, I go around my yard with my sprayer,on saturday mornin "search and destroy" missions. I got my dog trained to sniff the buggers out.He eats them (and everything else, including dirt). But that's another story :)

I can relate to the classroom. I learn something new about boats here every day, from guys who have been there and done that.A great bunch of folks on this site! And Adminn5 (The sysop) participates too.
And i also, am addicted. As the bumper sticker reads, A bad day in the boat is better than the best day at work".

Ahoy, Hooky. I'm not surprized that you got a lot of razz and ridicule at an elitist site. You might just as well have gotten on a site of Mercedes and BMW nuts and started asking if you made a smart decision to by a used Yugo.

If your objective was to get the most boat with the biggest engine that could be bought for your dollar you made a good buy. That is what Bayliners (and Forces) are: the most you gan get for your bux. You also showed up at the very best site in the universe for getting advice and help from successful B'liner/Force owners. That's the good news, but it may be all the good news you will hear.

Pretty as they are, B'liners are badly engineered, poorly built boats that need more TLC than a neurotic druggie. If yours hasn't had that you will hate it by April. If you don't constantly watch for and repair rot it will fall apart.

Force's problem is different. They are pretty well built engines with 1950s technology. They start out 30 to 50 years old and behave just like up-to-date engines did at that time. You will become an expert pretty quickly, and be giving advice here rather than asking it before next summer is over.

So, PlaynHooky, again, welcome aboard. You have come to the right place.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Well if you run it with excellent oil and do regular decarbonization treatements that psi of 125 could get a lot closer to 145.
