I am fairly certain the engine is a 1986 model 140 Johnson. Its a model J140TXCDC. It's a VRO but has been made into a premix engine. The engine ran well since this spring and in one day it started cutting back in spurts when running wide open. This has progressed to even in idle the engine will cough sputter and cut out and it will not run over 5 to 10mph under load. When the throttle is pushed past that point the engine simply chokes back. I have taken the carbs apart and cleaned them to pristene condition, gas is making it to the carbs, the plugs have fire and gas, and the filters had a lil trash so i replaced them and switched to an external gas tank but the problem persists. I am pretty much a novice on this engine so any suggestions would be great.

Re: 86' 140 Bogging

I have the exact same outboard, with the exact same problem. Please let me know if you find out what is causing it, because I'm stumped. I'm guessing it is somewhere in the ignition system. I'm researching sator coil, power pack, timer base, ignition coils and rectifier issues to see if I can find any similar issues. When I came across your post, I had to check the name because it looks like I wrote it.
