Hi all, i'm trying to get the transom brackets off a 1975 85hp johnson motor and have the nut off the pipe that is holding them to the motor. (the pipe that the steering goes through). The problem is the pipe doesn't seem to want to come out. Is there anything else holding it on? I can't see anything that is. I have hammered on it a bit with a block of wood on the nut but don't want to get a bigger hammer just yet. Thought I'd check with you guys to see if I am missing something or it is just being stubborn. Thanks,

Rich

Rich,
The tilt/steering tube may have threaded ends inside bracket(both sides)and must be turned out of the brackets.First, make sure the motor weight is supported(ie>engine hoist attached to powerhead,or other means.)One side of the tube may be double-nutted(2 nuts).Use the inner nut to back out(the tube) after removing opposite side nut(s).
If you don't see threads, the tube may be frozen in there(corrosion).Any grease fittings in front on bracket?Try a product called PB Blaster(spray)on it.Also,if safe to do,you can apply heat to the bracket(not tube)and try banging out.YOU MUST SUPPORT THE MOTOR OR IT WILL FALL OFF WHEN TUBE IS REMOVED...Probably around 300#lbs or so.Be careful!!! :)

Re: 85hp johnson transom bracket

hi, thanks for the reply. the motor is off the boat and supported... hanging from a tree with a come along...I have tried the pb stuff. There was only one nut on one side. On the other side there is a nut but it is countersunk into the bracket in a hole shaped like the nut. My guess is this is to hold it while tightening the otherside. ther are two grease fittings but they aren't anywhere near long enough to be catching it that i can see. Maybe time for a bigger hammer, thanks.

Rich

Ok, After trying a bigger hammer with no success I found that there is a nut on each end recessed into the bracket. there is no way to get any sort of wrench, socket, etc...on them.
the recess is the same shape and size as the nuts. How in the world can you get this apart? thanks,

Rich

irich, maybe I missed it but why are you trying to get the brackets off, If all you need are the brackets cut the tube (hacksaw) and drive out both ends from the middle. This will mean you will need a new steering tube.

I'm trying to get them off to replace them because they have been eaten by electrolysis. They appear to be threaded on each end. thanks,

Rich
