85hp 1974 Johnson gearcase removal

I have a 1974 85hp Johnson I am trying to remove the bottom gearcase have dropped this down about 20mm. I do not know how to remove it or how to disconnect the drive shaft (do i have this in reverse force it down to undo the shaft nut? this may cause damage?) I would like some advice please.

You're saying you've got a 20mm gap now? Did you disconnect the shift linkage?

If so, you may just have to spin the flywheel a couple of times to free up the drive shaft. Make sure you put a couple of bolts in so it doesn't drop with a giant thud.

you will see the shift shaft nder the bottom carb.it has a threaded pin through it which must be removed to allow gearcase to fully drop,its often easier to disconnect the control cable,a flexable 3/8 socket .1/4 drive makes the process easier as does a long 1/4 extension for the socket,if you put a piece of tape around the flex knuckle,it allows for more control

This is one of the motors that have the shift rod held by a pin in the bellcrank.

You need to loosen the screw that forms the fulcrum of the bellcrank, then spread the fingers at the end to release the pin. Click the thumbnail.

thanks everyone this information is saving me alot of time staring at the motor with a beer in my hand. by the time i would have figured it out i would have had to many beers and would have messed something up..woot woot. thanks all
