Second time I had the boat in the water, we're chugging along just fine when all of a sudden there's a loud "WHEEEEE!!" noise coming from the sterndrive and the boat comes to a stop.
The boat went straight to the shop, and the mechanic wanted a grand to replace the upper drive shafts. Heh, since that's more than I paid for the boat, I decided to try and fix it myself. Luckily (?), it's already mostly apart. This is what I got back from the boat shop:
And here is one end of my problem:
A few quick questions:
This is out of a 1985 Bayliner Capri 1950, 3.0 liter. I am almost positive that it's NOT a "Cobra" outdrive, since there is no trim, no keyhole in the transom (it's a rubber boot), and the whole thing is mounted to the stringers. I'm pretty sure that makes it a "Stringer" drive. Where can I find the model/serial numbers on the outdrive?
I found a parts kit online (both shafts, all the gaskets + water pump housing & impeller) for around $220. It says "3L 1982-1986 (NOT Cobra)", so hopefully I'm good to go.
Lastly, the mechanic said "both upper drive shafts are toast". It seems like one is an actual drive shaft, the other goes to the water pump? All the bearings feel fine, and everything turns easily by hand. I'm really hoping this isn't major surgery. Or that it requires any specialized tools...
Thanks!
