Yes you can use a timing light for a car. Clean the carbs so you can get your
idle rpms down. 1500rpms is going to kill your lower unit, atleast try to get it
under 1000. Make sure your fuel systems good before going wot or you'll be
starting a rebuild thread.

I need some help and advice. My 84 50hp Merc is losing power when I go WOT. It runs fine in neutral and a low throttle. This is my first attempt at working on a boat motor. I rebuilt the carbs and fuel pumps. I adjusted the floats and set the idle mix screws. When I started the motor after the rebuild, it was idling faster than normal. My question, will adjusting the idle mixture screw "out" slow the idle or should I adjust screw "in" to slow idle OR should I be adjusting something else like the "idle speed screw". I have not done a timing and sync, but noticed the "idle speed screw" in those directions. I would appreciate any help.
