85 HP Johnson Engine Check

I just purchased this engine. I dont really know how to go about checking to see what kind of condition it's in. The lady that sold it to my was left with it by her husband after he passed away. She says she thinks it runs but isn't sure. I am anxious to check it but really don't have the funds to pay a mechanic to check it. If someone could give me a step by step procedure for checking the engine I would greatly appreciate it. . It is electric start. Here are a few snapshots.
