85 evinrude 75hp, only starts when it wants to. It doesn't get fire to any of the cylinders. But one day it might start every time I hit the key, and when it starts it runs great. The next day won't hit a lick. I've replaced the ignition switch, stator, cdi box, rectifier. I checked all the grounds and I can't find any obvious bad wires. Any idea what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.

Charge the battery and have it load tested.-----Take starter apart for inspection and ohm test on armature.----No $$$ spent to do that.---Have to ask.-----You are pushing the key in and holding it in while cranking ?

It's like it has a mind of its own. ( I think I'll run today. Or I don't want to go fishing today so I'm not going to start.) Lol

There is a reason they name boats after women!!!

I'm thinking short somewhere....wires under flywheel maybe. Short or corrosion, something along those lines.

Keep looking.

two wires to short ignition in the "off" position typically run to a coil mount (one wire) and to the power pack (second wire). Best to find a factory manual to trace the wiring. If the ignition is shorted (by intention or not), the motor will not fire.
