looking for help on my neighbors' new-to-him outboard from you guys...
After starting engine and upon reducing rpm to idle, the engine suddenly (and always) simply quits...no carb sneeze, no exhaust backfire, no sudden rough running, no other warning.....and this would make for very bad docking behavior.
No difference when I squeeze the bulb @ the idle speed where I know the motors'
going to quit.
Engine always starts like a champ, warm or cold...using a higher idle with throttle lever.
Engine is in the water on the back of a boat, tied to the dock.
Had carbs apart for cleaning 3x now....always same result.
Carb cleaner into all the holes, nooks & crannies seems to show everything is clear.
Floats are dead level....needles appear to be not sticking.
Haven't changed the float needles or removed "soft plugs"...dosen't seem to be required(..?)
Engine was de-carbed and run on muffs on trailer....where it would start and idle all day long, if he left it to run.
New plugs @ .035"....correct Champions are used (forget the # as I'm typing this).
Fuel delivery seems ok....tank, bulb, pump, lines & filter.
The "link & sync" mechanisms haven't been touched and our problem is the idling @ the dock, anyway.
The slide plate moves freely, the throttle bars/pivots/etc. all SEEM ok.
Timing: 8 degrees BTDC @ about 5000 rpm...no load....upon reducing rpm, I see the light showing about TDC and then moving to 2 or 3 degrees ATDC with idle speed reduction.
The timing light flash shows bright & steady.
If we increase idle speed in order to keep the engine running while it's in the water, and leave it at that same setting when out of the water thus (removing the exhaust back pressure) the engine rpm is way high.
A new water pump was installed before we discovered this problem @ initial try-out...and possibly the motor was overheated @ some point prior to his purchase.
Compression is even across the (3) cylinders
The pulse line from the crankcase is clear....the VRO was replace before he got this motor.
Any thoughts or ideas as to why this quits running like it is would greatly be appreciated...thanks much, in advance for your input.
