Anybody ever put a transom on a winner bass boat? Was wondering if i need to cut the transom right at the splashwell or the whole outside back gel coat. Another words is the transom the width of the splashwell or the width of the boat?

The transom is the Center 1/3 of the stern. However, to replace it you need to have access to the side sections as well.

Before you get to carried away...Have you thoroughly inspected the rest of the boat to ensure it does not have any other issues. Soft spots in the deck? If the Transom is bad there's a very good chance the stringers are bad too. You really need to make sure the overall boat is good before you get to far into just doing the transom.

But, no, usually, it's NEVER best to cut thru the outside of the hull. Depending on what else is going on, there are options, removing the splashwell is only 1:

Give it a good once over, and post some pix of what you're working on. Use photobucket, it's free and lets you post BIG pix IN your posts, rather then as attachments.

I was thinking my stringers are all fiberglass in this year of boat. Would u recommend cutting splash well only?

Re: 84 winner z880 transom replacement

I've never been below decks on a 1984 winner z880, so I don't know.

To be clear, you think the stringers are fiberglass shells that have no wooden cores, and are wood-free?

Most boats have wood stringers encapsulated IN fiberglass, so many people 'think' they have stringers made of fiberglass.

How did you find/get this info:
I was thinking my stringers are all fiberglass in this year of boat.

Cutting the splashwell is an option, but not 1 I'd use. Makes all the fiberglass repairs in a highly visible, highly contoured portion of the boat.

Yes i believe they r solid fiberglass and the only wood put in that boat is the transom.

Uhmm What makes you think the stringers are all fiberglass. Not to many boats in the 80's were made with All Glass Stringers.

Well, I done did some investamagatin and danged if you ain't right!!!!!:D I really like learning new stuff and you challenged me to do so!!! Thanks for making me get out there and start diggin for the facts. Supposedly in 84' it was a NO WOOD boat and even the Transom was NO WOOD soooo...
What's the problem you're having??? If the transom has issues and it supposedly has no wood in it, I have not been able to find out what it was made from our how it was fabricated. I'll keep looking.

I think this is a boat like yours...

If so, and the transom IS a wood core then you could do a "ChainSaw" Composit Pour-In transom fairly easily. If it's already a composite Transom then I'm kinda at a loss as what the problem is.

Well, yeah, then it must be a WINNER if it's a wood-free boat :watermelon:

I'm w/ WOG, if it's a wood free transom, what's wrong that it needs to be replaced?

Congratulations on helping me learn something today too. Now, just where to put this info so I can find it again in 18mo when it comes up in another thread ......................

Re: 84 winner z880 transom replacement

I toured the Winner factory back in 1987 as I had purchased a new 1985 Escape Cuddy Cabin at a dealer in Jax, FL. For this particular boat, the stringers were fiberglass, no wood, however, the deck was wood, and had developed a soft spot aft, starboard side, in front of and under the jump seat. The deck was all wood, and they replaced it for free for me, less my drive there to drop it off and pick it up. My point here, deck was wood, but not sure about the transom.

Well i hit a stump at reelfoot lake and i have had flex in my transom ever since. I took the motor off and the top of the boat has seperated from the bottom half in the splashwell. Got stress cracks in splashwell and every corner of the rear hatch lids. I can see down in the transom and it is wood and it is at least 1/4 rotten. pics as soon as i figure out photobucket.

Photobucket instructions here http://forums.iboats.com/non-boating-technical-topics/how-posting-pictures-videos-533219.html

Yes you have wood in the boat transom and decking. The stringers were fiberglass. The most significant problem with the bass boats is the pounding they take which can separate some of the construction points. Your stringers can become detached from the hull and the cap can start to separate too. The stump hit you incurred has expedited the process.

You are probably running a 150 hp and I would suggest a real strong repair such as epoxy or seacast. I would advise you not to cat the back off the boat - do not cut open the outer skin of the hull.

Re: 84 winner z880 transom replacement

Once you get your photo loaded into photobucket use the IMG Code and copy and paste it into your iBoats thread.

So if you've verified that the transom does indeed have a wood core and that extensive amount of damage to the glass in the rear of the boat, it sounds like you may indeed need to cut the splashwell away to gain access to the area to make the repairs to the transom as well as to the splashwell and the hatch frames. Pics should help us to help you.

Re: 84 winner z880 transom replacement

Ok, Now if you could back up just a bit so we can get a bit of a perspective of the overall transom that would be good. Also a shot of the back of the transom would be helpful.
