i just bought this motor and the motor starter fine but the carborators jets clogged up after it cranked. is there a way to clean the jets with out sending it to the mechanic ? it cranks but dies rather fast after that.

Stop running the motor.----------A plugged carburetor can ruin a motor.--------Remove the carburetors and take them apart for cleaning.--------Not hard to do yourself.----------And has any other trouble shooting been done or just assumed it is the carburetors ??

well i bought the boat this previous weekend. replaced the hose and bulb. used a small gas can with clean fuel in it to feed the motor. boat has been sitting for a few years being neglected. at first crank the motor sounded great then the jets seemed to plug slowly. more of less assuming the carburetors. the spark plugs looked decent. i had to replace the ignition due to the loss of the key from previous owners. i bought one form auto zone that matched. the choke solenoid clicks but i don't see any type of external choking going on. the throttle cable has apparently been replaced it has a quick silver throttle, it don't have a throttle up on the shifter. if you have another idea please let me know and i will look into it.

i have cleaned many dirt bike carborators but there are three on it and they are connected with a lever. that seems to intemidate me. the fuel bulb dont pump up and get hard and fuel leaks out of the middle carborator when i try to pump it up till it is hard.

Leaking fuel indicates the carbs need service. They are pretty simple to work on. You need to disconnect the battery and remove the cowling support and starter to get at the carbs. I always remove the three carb covers as an assembly. Then individual carbs. The lower brass hex nut is the cover over the main jet. The brass plug on top of the carb covers the idle restrictor tube. There are three or so small holes in the inner wall of the carb throat. Make sure to clean them.

Buy new gaskets and inlet needles and floats (about $50). Set floats per service manual, and set idle mixture needles to 1-1/2 turns open. The hardest thing is to get the idle mixtures set correctly. That takes some patience.

Clean the carburetors.----This motor does not have any choke flappers.---It has an enricher system that allows extra fuel into the engine while cranking.

It really is simple work.----But for some folks it appears to be an impossible task to do.----If you have that kind of money just " laying around " it is likely best to get it done.-----But I can tell you that after you do it yourself you will say ---" that was easy "

There is a link for some OB manuals. The issues is that it is very slow, so you need to realistically print out the pages so you have a ready reference. You can pick up a seloc or Clymer manual for cheap. The problem is that the seloc or Clymer manuals are often incorrect, sometimes seriously incorrect. The best is obviously an OEM Sercvice manual. Maybe a library will have one?

just did this on my 60hp mariner. It is a easy job. disconnect the fuel line from the motor. remove the air box. and you see 6 13mm bolts. remove these. then pull out the carburetors carefully. then disconnect the main fuel line on the fulfiller. on the left side of the upper carb you see a small hose remove this, and on the bottom carb there is probably a rod that goes to the oil pump. just pull that straight out from the carb. then the carbs is free.

remove the drain plug in the bottom of each carb and drain the fuel.

take one carb at the time. work over a tub so if you loose some parts you can find them again.
see this video for more info.

ok sorry i have been busy with the holidays stuff. OK i removed the carburetors, cleaned them and replaced. you are correct it is pretty easy. there was a little junk in the fuel bowl/float area. when i pump up the bulb it still does not get hard. fuel still comes out of the middle carburetor. i removed the fuel line up to the fuel pump. once i do that the bulb gets hard. i removed the fuel line to carburetor and cranked the motor. no fuel came out at all. I am thinking i have a fuel pump issue. i removed the bottom side of the fuel pump where there is a screen. i am not sure how the fuel pump on this think works. is it like an old truck a piston in the motor pushed a lever inside it.

No mechanical bits operate this simple pump..--It is driven by positive pressure pulses and slight negative pulses.---Install a repair kit.

Nonsense, the repair kit is available all day long.--Talk to a Mercury dealer as it is likely an " in stock " item.

Well i got the fuel pump kit in today and installed it. The motor now runs. I wanted to thank you for your advice. I am not sure but it might be smoking too much. The motor has been sitting for 3-4 years i believe. I want to put it on the water so i can open it up more and then change the spark plugs.
